Built between 1874 and 1877, Fort Fontain is part of the region's defensive system designed by General Séré de Rivières after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Perched at an altitude of 507 meters, it overlooks the 7 hills of Besançon on one side and offers an exceptional panorama of the Jura Mountains on the other. Designed to house nearly 300 soldiers, it consists of a complex network of galleries, barracks, and defensive structures.
